From the President: September 2007

The lament that "the days are getting shorter" gathers momentum, what with the new school year starting and the end of summer contemplated. Or is that the days remain the same length, and I'm getting shorter? I'm easily confused.

Meanwhile, the Sierra Writers annual summer break ends—no meetings in July or August. We're back, starting September 12, with 6:30 PM meetings on the second Wednesday of the month. Babette Donaldson speaks about writing books for children. October 10 is one of our twice yearly "Open Reads" where you can bring a poem or the first few pages of a story or book you're working on for some constructive criticism by fellow writers.

We have an "Accolades" link on our website that is woefully underused. Among the many things that could be done to make our website a more communicative one, please contact Chuck Jaffee with any accomplishment you would like to share. Indeed, let us know about any ideas you might have for improving what Sierra Writers offers.

For instance, Betsy Graziani Fasbinder sent me a link to an online women's writing salon, http://www.nevadacountyartscouncil.org/womenswriting/salon.html. She says it's "a terrific place for the publication of women's poetry and prose." She also says, "I'm fortunate enough to be featured here for the second time with a poem called 'The Dark Side of the Moon'" She mentions that she has a short story called "Smell the Coffee" in the salon archives.

For instance, check out www.lindalanterman.homestead.com. Linda is a Sierra Writers member who has published several books, including her most recent, "Stain."
