From the President: February 2007

Happy Valentine's Day. That is to say, we expect you not to attend the Wednesday, February 14, Sierra Writers meeting at Madelyn Helling Library. That is to say, we changed the meeting date to Thursday, February 15. We don't want to be so rigid about our regular second Wednesday of the month meetings that it conflicts with one of the few holidays that is so important, it can still occur on a Wednesday.

Don't exhaust yourself so thoroughly making your Valentine happy that you won't be able come to the shifted Sierra Writers meeting on Thursday, February 15, 6:30 PM at Community Room of the Madelyn Helling Library in Nevada City. Claudine Chalmers will speak about structure in writing, including some tips for transcending writer's block. Her disciplined efforts include the highly praised tome, Splendide Califonie! Impressions of the Golden State by French Artists, 1786-1900. (Claudine is French, and beyond that claims to be a Cartesian.)

In honor of Valentine's Day on the Sierra Writers horizon, I bumped into a quotation from Ray Bradbury that sounds like a tall order for writers, but an invigorating challenge: "Write only what you love, and love what you write. The key word is love. You have to get up in the morning and write something you love, something to live for." Sounds like a challenge that could invigorate many activities.
