April 2008: Poet Molly Fisk

April 9, 2008

Location:

Poetry can seem a little intimidating to some people. To Molly Fisk, poetry is just another means of communicating ideas about nature, humanity, emotion, passion and humor. Fisk is a celebrated poet, writing teacher and radio personality who lives in Nevada City. To help celebrate April as National Poetry Month, Sierra Writers will host Fisk. She will conduct a mini-workshop entitled, “The Best Words in the Best Order.”

In this free-to-the-public workshop Fisk will help participants transcend intimidation and write some poetry. Whether you are a seasoned writer just wanting to learn more about the craft of poetry or you’re completely new to the idea of scratching your ideas onto a piece of paper, this workshop is a great opportunity to get some instruction and encouragement from a master.

Fisk is the author of “Listening to Winter,” “Salt-Water Poems,” co-author of “Terrain” (with Dan Bellm and Forrest Hamer) and has a CD of radio commentary named, “Using Your Turn Signal Promotes World Peace.” Listeners of KVMR will recognize her voice as a regular reader of essays and poetry. She was honored with fellowships in poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Arts Council and the Marin Arts Council and has won numerous writing awards. Those familiar with Fisk’s work appreciate not only the vivid imagery and poignancy, but the humor and whimsy that she brings to her writing.

To learn more about Molly Fisk, you can go to her website, www.mollyfisk.com. Join her for “The Best Words in the Best Order” on Wednesday, April 9th at 6:30 pm in the community room of the Madelyn Helling Library at 980 Helling Way, next to the Rood Administration Center off of Highway 49.

Sierra Writers is a local organization created to celebrate and support writers in the community. Sierra Writers customarily meets the second Wednesday of each month (except for July and August). For questions contact Chuck Jaffee at 530 265-2982 or visit www.sierrawriters.org.
